The man behind

The Nursery

Welcome to the “home of phaleanopsis violacea”!!

Established in the late 1950's amid the lush greens of the riverbank in Province Wellesley, it grew from a hobby, by our beloved Ooi Leng Sun, from a small collection of exotic orchids. It was considered the golden years of orchids, where orchids are considered for the privileged. He was known to be so passionate about his orchids to the brink of fanatic. Considering the difficulties in tele-communication, logistics and other infrastructures during those times, it is amazing that he was able to import plants from all over the world, especially from California, Florida, United Kingdom and Hawaii.

Based on recollection of stories told, he had also imported plants from establishments such as David Sanders from UK, Rob McLellan, Stewart Orchids, Jones & Scully from America just to name a few. Of course, the most sought after orchid hybrids were always from Hawaii.

Through these times, friendship had flourished. The relationships grew from mere business associates to best of friends. Among them are R.T. Fukumura, Johnny Noa, Oscar M. Kirch, T. Ogawa, Kono, Dr. Nishimura of Hilo Orchids and of course, Masatoshi Miyamoto of Miyamoto Orchids.

The Nursery was also the first to introduce Ascocenda Yin Sum Wah from Mr. R.T. Fukumura in Malaysia and later re-exported these magnificent orchids hybrid to Thailand.

Succeeding his father, a fresh graduate from University of Hawaii, Michael realized the importance of having a breeding line. It was indeed a very difficult undertaking. With whatever free time he had in the nursery and laboratory, he travels the length of country's jungles. He always came home with cuts and bites suffered during his venture into the jungles all for the love of the local orchid species. With better understanding of species in nature, even in the early days, Michael was a strong advocate for conservation through captive breeding.

It was indeed a blessing that the desired variety of species can be found quite easily in the jungles of Malaysia where the nursery developed commitment for selective breeding for the finest violacea/bellina. After almost 30 years, with the advantage of having thousands of jungle-collected plants, the nursery is proud to boast of its ability to produce some of the finest Phaleanopsis violacea/bellina.

The nursery is proud to have created many breeding lines and it is not uncommon to see our hybrids as winners in local and international orchid shows, as well as being awarded.

In our private collection, we believe we have the finest selection of both the normal and albino forms of Phaleanopsis violacea/bellina. The nursery is also the first to commercially introduce the blue Phaleanopsis violacea to the orchid world.

To date, the nursery had grown to a full fledge commercial nursery and laboratory capable of producing and propagating exotic and most sought after orchids within the industry. It also comes complete with a fully equipped laboratory and well-trained staffs.

Occupying a total land area of two hectors, the nursery not only boasts of magnificent collections of orchids but other interesting and exotic plants, animals and birds - hobbies of the family.

It had been 30 years and we still find lots of excitement in creating new hybrids in the most challenging and demanding markets. We take pride in being able to fulfill these sophisticated needs though at times may seen extremely difficult.

We hope to flourish for another 30 years to come and continue to be the Hallmark of Excellence.
